Online poll: Winter Olympics coverage not must-see TV

Olympics? What Olympics?

Most of those responding to a McDowell News online poll said they were tuning into something other than winter Olympic coverage over the past couple of weeks.

Early primetime viewership for the winter Olympics was down 36 percent from four years ago, and an episode of “American Idol” averaged 31 million viewers against just 15.1 million for the Olympics.

Still, NBC estimated that 65 percent of the nation’s homes with televisions tuned into at least some of the games.

We received more than 200 responses to our poll question, which asked readers if they were tuning in with any regularity.

Seventy-four percent (158 votes) were not, while only 25 percent (53 votes) watched frequently.

This week, we take a look at the controversial port issue. The Bush administration will conduct a second review of potential security risks in a business deal it previously approved for a United Arab Emirates-based company to take over significant operations at six leading U.S. ports, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The new, 45-day investigation comes after members of Congress, the media and the public expressed concern that the deal would threaten national security.
